Bunkers and Rough — What Every Lie Costs in Daily Holes
Two bunkers guard each hole and two depths of rough line the fairway. Each lie cuts carry, widens the spread and kills rollout.
Where the bunkers are
Every hole except the crossing has two bunkers: one in the driving zone, roughly a third of the way up, and one close to the green. Each sits to one side of the line, leaving the other side open as a bailout. The fairway also changes width along the hole and is usually narrowest in the middle.
What each lie costs
From rough, a full shot carries 84% of its normal distance; from deep rough, 62%; from sand, 70%, and never more than 160 yards. All three widen the spread considerably, deep rough most of all. Rollout is cut too: a ball landing in rough barely runs, and one landing in sand stops almost dead.
Recovering
The club table already adjusts for your lie, so trust the shown yardage rather than your memory of the fairway number. From deep rough or sand, the priority is getting back to the fairway, not reaching the green. A pure strike tightens the spread and is worth more from a bad lie than from a good one.
How to play it
Find the open side of each bunker before the tee shot and aim slightly that way. Because the fairway pinches in the middle, a club that finishes before or after the narrow section keeps more shots on the short grass. Accepting a longer approach from fairway beats a shorter one from deep rough.
