Daily Conditions — Wind, Ground and Course Length in Daily Holes

Each day from 6 October 2026 has one condition — windy, calm, firm, soft, long or short — that applies to the whole course.

By the numbers

What it is

From 6 October 2026 each day has one condition, chosen from the date like everything else, so everyone playing that day gets the same one. The home screen names it, the wind box shows it during play and, on desktop, the hole card explains it. On about three days in ten the condition is normal and nothing changes.

The six conditions

A windy day makes the wind 80% stronger and adds a gust to every hole. A calm day makes the wind 70% lighter and removes every gust. Firm ground makes the ball roll 25% further on every surface; soft ground makes it roll about a third less. A long course makes every hole 10% longer; a short course makes every hole 12% shorter. Windy, calm, firm and soft each come up on about one day in seven, long and short each on about one in fourteen.

How they change scoring

In our simulations a long course costs a typical player close to one stroke more than a normal day, and a short course saves a little under one. Firm and soft ground cost a few tenths each — firm because balls run through greens and into water, soft because approaches stop short. Windy and calm days change which shots are hard more than the total.

How to adjust

On firm ground, land the ball shorter and let it run, and keep well short of water behind greens. On soft ground, carry the ball closer to the target. On a windy day, prefer lower, shorter clubs across gusts and allow for the wind before you lock the line. On a long course, the par-6 finale may need three full shots.

Worked example

A pure driver that rolls about 39 yards on the fairway on a normal day rolls about 49 on firm ground and about 25 on soft ground. On a long course, a 470-yard par 5 becomes about 517 yards; on a short course it is about 414.

Common mistakes

Not checking the condition before the first tee shot. Using normal-day yardages on a long or short course — the yardage on each hole already includes the change, so trust it. And on firm days, aiming at the back of greens that drop into water.
